Follicle-Stimulating Hormone test

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone or FSH test is a kind of blood test used to measure the level of FSH hormone present in the blood. This is a Gonadotropin released from anterior pituitary that helps ovarian follicles to mature and plays an indispensable role in the growth and development of sperm.

Doctors order the FSH test to:-

  • Find out the condition of menopause or
  • Identify the cause behind an irregular menstrual cycle
  • Testing the female and male fertility
  • Low sperm count

Besides these, an FSH test helps to identify any case of pituitary disorder or to check out whether a child gains puberty too early or too late. The normal level of FSH also known as the reference values by which your FSH test report are compared are:-

  • For males older than age 18: 1.0-18.0 International Units Per Liter (IU/L)
  • For Postmenopausal women: 16.7-113.6 IU/L

In premenopausal women:

  • Follicular: 3.9-8.8 IU/L
  • Midcycle: 4.5-22.5 IU/L
  • Luteal: 1.8-5.1 IU/L

Doctors can check the FSH level either through blood test or urine test. Besides the FSH test, your doctor may suggest LH test, testosterone or Estrogen test for proper diagnosis of fertility problem and based on the test report would provide you further treatment. Certain medicines that increase FSH levels are cimetidine, clomiphene, digitalis or levodopa while some medicines like   hormone replacement therapies, oral contraceptives and phenothiazines may decrease FSH level.
